1. PURPOSE
This document describes the policy and procedures for:
1.1
Supporting and empowering all students to succeed in their studies at the GCA.
1.2
Providing students with a diagnosed disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition support to participate equitably and productively throughout their studies.
1.3
Expectations of employees when supporting students, including those with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition.

The scope of this document applies to:

3. DEFINITIONS
Discrimination
The unfair or prejudicial treatment of a person or group based on a protected personal characteristic, such as race, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.
Disability Standards for Education 2005
The Disability Standards for Education 2005 clarify the obligations of education and training providers and seek to ensure that students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability.
Inclusive Education
Inclusive education supports everyone learning, growing and succeeding in all our diversity. It involves adapting the environment and teaching approaches to ensure genuine and valued full participation.
Making reasonable adjustments which allow students with disability to participate and learn on the same basis as students without disability.
Preventing harassment and victimisation of students with disability
Consulting regularly with students with disability and their parents and caregivers to develop reasonable adjustments and address concerns as they arise.
4.2
The GCA is committed to the principles of the Universal Design for Learning, as detailed in the Course Design and Review PP02 policy document.
4.3
Confidentiality and Consent
Student details will not be disclosed or discussed with a third party, including GCA employees, without verbal or written consent (or other appropriate means if required) from the student. Student information will only be shared with parents or guardians if a student is under the age of 18 years.
4.4
Learning Support Officers will:
Provide guidance to prospective students, including students who are early in their disability journey and don’t have a diagnosis, or students who declare a disability.
Act in a timely manner to ensure students can actively participate throughout their student journey.
Leverage a range of communication channels such as SMS, email and the LMS, to suit the preferences of the students where possible.
Work with the students to discuss support available, understand any reasonable adjustments required through the student’s journey and in partnership with the student and Program Coordinator.
Coordinate comprehensive support services as part a Learning Plan in partnership with the program manager as required.
Support students holistically, proactively linking in with internal and external supports as required.
4.5
Student Responsibilities
Students will initiate and maintain contact with Learning Support officers and/or Program Coordinators to communicate their requirements in a timely manner.
Students will monitor and respond to emails from the Learning Support officers and/or Program Coordinators.
If in-class supports have been organised, students are required to advise the disability service within 48 hours of class of non-attendance to enable cancellation of the support.
Feedback or adjustments to in-class supports must be communicated through Learning Support officers and not directly to employees assigned to the student.
4.5
Student Responsibilities

4.6
Educators are expected to:
Create and maintain a safe and inclusive welcoming classroom/online environment.
Be available for face-to-face and email consultations with students during business hours in line with contractual arrangements.
Always maintain confidentiality and privacy when working with students with a Learning Plan.
Refer students to Learning Support officers and/or Program Coordinators as needed.
Maintain academic integrity and consider the inherent requirements of a course, when considering reasonable adjustments.
Actively seek advice from the Learning Support officers and/or Program Coordinators support team for additional information or support as required.
Notify learning support officers and Program Coordinator’s if a scheduled class need to be changed.
5. PROCEDURES
5.1. Disability Support
5.1.1

5.1.5
[ACTION] A learning plan will be formulated in consultation with the Program Coordinator. Adjustment can be made as required throughout the student’s studies with the GCA. [RESPONSIBILITY] Program Coordinator, Learning Support Officer
5.1.6
[ACTION] If a student is assessed as requiring ergonomic equipment and/or assistive technology this will be loaned to the student by the GCA within reason. [RESPONSIBILITY] Learning Support Officer in Consultation with the CEO.
